Was wondering if there's a way to filter fics so we see only fics with at least X number of kudos for every chapter.

So if X=100 then

A fic with 5 chapters and 520 kudos will show but a fic with 3 chapters and 120 kudos won't.

Just went through 100+ pages of fic and it was exhausting - it would make getting into new fandoms with boatloads of fic easier.

I don't know about AO3 filters (probably impossible), but it could be done with a script. Only I'm not sure if that's a very useful metric? You can only leave kudos once on a fic, no matter how many chapters it has (unless you leave them anonymously, I guess). Do you think a one-chapter fic with 100 kudos is better than a two-chapter fic with 100 kudos?

(Sorry if it sounds harsh, I'm just wondering if you noticed a trend!)

Not specifically what you are asking for, but. You can do search filter for date updated, and word counts sorted by kudos. So I'll sometimes start with more popular by kudos short stories, them switch to a particular pairing etc.

Another option is to find a story you like, then see who bookmarked it, and if they bookmarked other stories in the fandom.

Since kudos is limited to once per fic per person I can usually tell how popular a fic is on AO3 whereas hits and comments will include multiple counts generated by the same people. X is an example - it can be 50 or 25 etc.

Just like with LJ, sometimes Ao3 fics can have long threaded comments and comments are also more frequent on controversial fic too so I don't like to depend on that. Hits is the closest alternative but it doesn't reflect whether people enjoyed the fic, just that they loaded the page. They might have hit the back button after a paragraph.

Normally I use rec lists but when doing deep dives into the Ao3 archives I do want to find what is popular and appreciated at the moment in multiple fandoms fast. So I tend to gravitate towards the kudos count. It's a flawed system but personally I find it more reliable?

Though of course, there's no accounting for fandom trends/cliches/tastes where terrible stuff gets a lot of kudos. Still, that's the norm in most fandoms.

Right now I'm filtering by lack of major character death, kudos greater than 70 and sorted by date updated (+ complete fic only). Will fine tune by word count for deep dives into the archives :D

Usually rely on updated rec lists for fandoms, but will take a look at bookmarks, thanks!

Yes, I agree that kudos count is the most reliable. But I'm not sure how it relates to the number of chapters? Like, out of two fics with 500 kudos, I wouldn't think the one with less chapters is more popular/better.

What I find useful is kudos/hits ratio, which shows how many people who loaded the fic liked it. It's also a flawed system, especially for chaptered fics (which usually get more hits as they're updated), but I like it for newer fics and oneshots. Probably not the most useful for diving into a fandom, though :(

Tbh I still don't get why the number of chapters is important, but here you go :)
